THE DESERTER
May 1945: The end of the war in the Tyrolean Alps. The wounded SS soldier Anton has deserted. On the run, he discovers a remote mountain pasture. Hannah, a Jewish woman, hides there. She tends to his wounds. There is deep mistrust between them, but together they cope with the harsh realities of daily life. They are looked after by the 16-year-old farmer Charlotte. At night, they hear the fighting between German troops and Italian partisans. Over time, a cautious intimacy develops between Anton and Hannah – he, who has done and witnessed terrible things, she, who has lost her family and struggles with fear and loneliness high in the mountains. They grow closer. Hannah discovers that Anton was no ordinary soldier. He was part of the SS, a man of conviction. Brutal truths come to light. The war is practically over, but what future awaits them? Georg appears: He has been searching for Anton, hunting him down. He was the one who shot Anton – his best friend. Georg is fighting a long-desperate battle, driven by hatred and the will to destroy everything and everyone who stands in his way.
The Deserter is a story about war and guilt, but also about compassion and humanity.
