When Sepp watches his grandson playing with a Prussian boy, he is immediately reminded of his own childhood, a time filled with hatred for the "other people." Bavarians and Prussians have nothing in common, he is certain. They merely live in the same country. A rivalry that begins as play between Bavarian farm children and Prussian newcomers gradually develops into a hatred that cannot end well.
